DIY: Cork Board Map

DIY: Cork Board Map

Today post is a DIY Cork Board Map, and how to do it… I realise how daft that sounds.. this is a DIY about how to do it yourself… duh. Anyho’s. It is also my second recycled post, which you might recall me saying I wanted to do this month if you read my blogging goals for April.

DIY Travel Cork Board Map

What You Will Need:

  • Map
  • Mod Podge
  • Cork Sheet or a cork board if you can find one of the correct size. (I bought mine off eBay but I’m unable to find the exact one now)
  • Frame, you won’t be requiring the glass (I bought mine from The Range)
  • Pins

DIY: Cork Board Map

How To:

Depending on what map style and size you choose your cork and photo frame will vary. This is why I highly recommend you choose your map first so you can get the correct measurements. Once you have made this decision, and have everything you need the process is very simple.

  • If needs be, cut the map or cork slightly to get the correct fit. If you buy a cork sheet you will likely need to weigh it down for a while as they arrive coiled up.
  • Mod podge the map to the cork board/sheet. As the cork is absorbent you may require more mod podge then you’d originally assume, ensure it is good and tacky. This next part was the most difficult for me, applying the map smoothly without any air bubbles proved difficult. Because of this there are air bubble visible on my map. However I actually like the way this looks now, I think it has an aging effect on it.
  • If you want to leave the map looking shiny (depending again on what map design you have bought) you can leave it at this step, however further applying mod podge atop of the map gives it a slightly antique appearance.
  • In between coats let the glue dry, I applied around 3 coats, but again, personal preference. Apply and see how you like the look.
  • Once it is all dried you can place it in the photo frame (minus the glass, obviously) and start pinning.

For now the only pins I have are places I’ve traveled. But with time I will add a partners pins for where they have been, places we have traveled together and a pin for where our home is, all different colours. As you can also see there is a string connecting all the pins across America as that was a road trip.

I think this is a really cute idea for the home pin…

And that is it, very easy to do once you have sourced all the items. If you haven’t yet managed to travel further afield, you could always use a large map of your own country instead of a world map. If any of you do this please let me know, I’d love to see your versions.

I love how yours came out. I’ve been actually wanting to do a board like this for my travels though not necessarily a map because I don’t actually expect to step out of the country a lot due to insufficient funds haha.
But I love this so much!! I hope you get to travel more and the little house with balloons(?) totally reminds me of the movie “UP” and I think it’s a perfect icon for “home”

Thank you Jamie 💜 I was so annoyed when I couldn’t lay it without the wrinkles but I’m glad it came out this way now 😊
