Mood Lifters

Sometimes life can get you down and constantly swimming upstream seems down right impossible. On those days/weeks/months, it’s good to know what your personal mood lifters are. Defining them when you’re in a good place makes it so much easier to use them when you’re low. Here are some of mine; ranging from silly, inconsequential stuff that still puts a smile on my face to my most treasured loves that help make me happy even on the worst of days. 

  • Oscar & Mia – Pets are amazing, and whilst I love all animals I am a dog person, they are just so loving, loyal, constant, and friggin’ hilarious. There isn’t a single day that passes where Oscar does not make me smile, does not make my heart swell with love. And now Mia is here too, bringing even more happiness into my life. I could go on endlessly about them but none-dog-people and none-animal-people would find me stranger than they likely already do. So I’ll just include photos of them instead.
  • My nieces and nephews – how can you not be besotted with tiny little beings. With their curious natures, and the endless stream of dopey comments they make. I’ll give you an example; my nephew, Max, who at the time was around 2 years old – Sat in the car with Max and I turn around to see if he’s okay and he starts pointing at something saying ‘oh no, oh no’, so I start looking around asking what’s wrong…my sister (his mum) turns to me and asks whether I have a spot… which yes I did, a considerable one on my chin that I had attempted to hide with make-up. So Max.. the little darling, is pointing at my spot saying ‘oh no’…

Ahh children, our future.

  • Spending quality time with my Mum and two Sisters, usually on a visit to town – being with the females in my family is always fun, being around family in general can lift your mood, and I don’t just mean the family you are born with, if you have a difficult relationship with your blood relatives reach out to friends instead, go online and search out areas of it where like-minded people talk and comment. Having any interaction like that is likely to bring you comfort and happiness.
  • My Dad being highly amused by his own jokes – he’s just so damn adorable when he finds himself funny.
  • Trees – there is something completely ineffable about my love for trees. Whether coated in summer rays, speckled with rain, or with a perfect sheet of snow on them, I find them beautiful and very calming to look at.


  • Nature in general – despite the obvious; its amazing restorative properties and boast of vitamin D, there is so much to see, I am going to find this difficult to say without sounding corny but the way flowers move in the wind, or watching insects go about their business, there is a true comfort to be found in nature. The author of ‘Wild’ said something in an interview once that really stuck with me;

”The wild offers us this opportunity to physically enact what we need to do spiritually, what we need to do emotionally and psychologically, not just to survive but to thrive – The wild is a punishing place, we are at the mercy of something that is far greater than us, and that is always true in our lives. We think that it is not true in our lives, we think that we can control our lives and our environment, and that we have so much more power than we actually have, but the wild teaches us to surrender. It also teaches us to remember that we are always in beauty, that there is always beauty around us and we can find that if we look”.

Take from that what you will, but for me its just a good reminder that life isn’t always going to play out the way we hope, or the way we have been tirelessly working for it to be; it is wild, and untameable, but it is beautiful and awe inspiring if you’re willing to just look a bit harder.

  • Working towards something, big or small – I completed an online Business & Administration course last year, and whilst at times the coursework felt irksome, I knew the satisfaction of completing the course would be worth it. Sometimes feeling productive is all you need to help turn your mood around.
  • Lists – being more of a type A personality lends to me loving lists, and checking things off, I sometimes even put things on my to-do lists that I have already done, just for the enjoyment of ticking it off.
  • Organisation – of any kind, organising my photos onto a hard-drive in date order, organising my clothes, organising trinkets around my room… all give me peace of mind, which helps lift my mood.
  • My bed – Does this really need further explanation?
  • Binge watching TV shows – sometimes escaping from your reality for a while is just what you need to recharge, losing yourself in another world can give your mind time to rest, recover and come back fighting. (Down side is I am now almost incapable of watching shows when they are only aired weekly).
  • Reading – by the same token as above, only with books you can indulge your imagination more.
  • Having good HD Brows – brows frame your entire face, and if you have never had your brows professional shaped to suit you you may not understand what a difference they can make. Knowing that when I look in the mirror I will be greeted by tamed, tinted, full brows makes me happy.
  • Having make-up on – as I don’t wear make-up everyday, applying it can lift my mood, if you feel like you look good (or at least in my case feel like you look more presentable) on the outside, it will radiate inwards. All this translates to is taking care of your outer self to help your inner one.
  • Music – NOT MELANCHOLIC. Upbeat, happy, dancing music, that you would never be able to listen to whilst crying.
  • Tidy room – pretty self explanatory.

And finally,

  • Wallow – sometimes you just need to let the sad mood brew, feel whatever it is you are feeling and work your way through it naturally. There are many situations in which trying to avoid your feelings only allows them to fester into something darker and nastier. So if you’re angry, feel angry, sad, feel sad, betrayed.. you get the idea. You just have to learn to know yourself enough to know which route you should take to lift your mood.

    I would have to agree with all of these and yes, children, dogs, and nature always uplift my mood!

      😊 always reliable, I might open a nature cafe with kid servers and dogs to pet at every table 😉

    Your pictures are fantastic! A good sunset will get me every time, no matter where I am or how I feel, it’s just something about the colours in the sky, with an orange sun.

    This is a really thoughtful and earnest post which needs at least 100 more likes!

    I agree with you about everything except eyebrows (mine are wild and old-man-like, and are highly unlikely to ever be sculpted or trimmed because I think they look kind of cool exactly as they are!)

      Lol, if you like the way they look naturally then they are already serving the purpose of feeling good about your outside, and it being easier to feel good on the inside 🙂 I just happen to not rate my natural brows 😉

        No problem, and I enjoyed reading.
        Sadly, I think men are given a lot more leeway in general when it comes to appearance so we can afford to be a bit more casual about it.
