Today I am posting a quick and simple DIY for Pom Pom Wicker Baskets. These are great for gifting this Christmas and are super cheap and easy, costing around £15 for the whole shebang, and obviously the tool is reusable and you’ll still have yarn left over for next time.
Not to mention you can buy ones that look exactly the same online for £25-40!!! Seriously. This first one you can purchase for £40.08 and the second for £25. Not even taking into consideration postage. I mean, what?!
Although if you want me to make one for you let me know, I could do with the money lol. I’ll only charge £15 though. 😉
These are an adorable addition to anyones house and you can personalise them a few different ways. Go bright and colourful or muted and simple with the yarn colour. You can use them as a planter, toy basket, magazine holder. You can put some fake flowers in them and have it sat on the floor. Or as a laundry basket. If you get a big enough basket you can also store some blankets in them. The options are quite endless.
What you need: DIY Pom Pom Wicker Baskets
- Wicker Basket
- Yarn (I got mine from The Range)
- Pom Pom Maker
- Optional: Paint (I used Reeves Ready Mix Paint)
A DIY really doesn’t get much simplier than this. Follow the instructions on your pom pom maker, which has multiple sizes, or search online how to DIY a pom pom maker if you don’t want to spend the couple of pounds on the pack. Although I thinks it a much easier way to go, especially if you are going to do this gift idea for a few people. After you’ve finished the pom pom, trim it to shape and then thread through the wicker basket. Additionally you can paint the basket using standard paint. And that is it. It’s almost embarassing that I’m making this into a post. But I needed content so..
As I’ve said, these can be personalised so many different ways, with the yarn colour, where you chose to paint, or not paint. You can go with patterns or block colours. The length and positions of the pom poms. You can add extra accessories, which you can also DIY or purchase ready made, like large tassels or tiny pom pom trim. I just think they are a cute little gift for anyone.
When my nephew first saw the basket featuring my plant back in the Summer.. – because yes, I’ve had this post in my bank since then! He asked whether he could have one too. Which is why two of the baskets have somewhat interesting coloured pom poms as I let the kids pick the colours. Max wanted the rainbow and blue and Emily requested the rainbow and green. Specifically because it reminded her of The Grinch, I’m not kidding when I say that’s her favourite film.
Also, please enjoy these photos of me stuggling to get my pictures without my dogs getting in the way. I swear, if they weren’t so cute there would be trouble.

Ah good! I was worried it’d be too basic a DIY but then I forget I didn’t know about them until I saw a picture 🙈 so other people might not have seen them either!
Exactly! And I’m so impressed that you were able to recreate the baskets just from looking at the picture and figuring it out. You’ve got skills, girl! I’m so not handy at these things at all haha.
